Aftershocks continued to throng through New Zealand after the South Island was hit be a 7.5 magnitude earthquake at just after midnight on Monday morning local time.
The quake killed at least two people and was felt in the capital of Wellington. It originated near the town of Kaikoura, which is north-east of Christchurch.
Daylight has revealed the full scale of the damage. Here are some of the most important images of the aftermath.

Kaikoura, near the quake's epicentre, has been cut off by landslides. This image shows the damage to State Highway One and the main railway line north of the town.

As well as the landslide, State Highway One has been ripped apart by the tremors.
